De Nations League wordt elke 2 jaar gehouden en de UEFA Nations League wordt afgekort tot UNL. Deze wedstrijden vervangen grotendeels de vriendschappelijke interlands, waardoor voetbalfans hun nationale team veel meer spannende wedstrijden zien spelen.

Het seizoen 2026/2027 is de vijfde editie van de Europese voetbalcompetitie, en start in september 2026. Een jaar later, in juni 2027 worden de finalewedstrijden gespeeld.
Nederland en België komen beide uit in de hoogste League A. Het WK 2026 is het eerstvolgende grote internationale voetbaltoernooi waaraan Nederland en België mogen deelnemen.

UEFA Nations League Final Four
De 4 winnaars van de groepen in League A spelen voor de titel in een knock-out systeem, genaamd de Final Four. De knock-out wedstrijden bestaan uit twee halve finales, een troostfinale en een finale. Deze halve finales en finale zullen gespeeld worden in juni 2027.
De Final Four zijn finalewedstrijden waarin één land kampioen wordt van deze voetbalcompetitie. De winnaar van de Final Four krijgt géén ticket voor het EK of WK.
Portugal is de meest recente kampioen door de finale van Spanje te winnen in de penaltyserie. Frankrijk werd derde door de troostfinale van Duitsland te winnen. Portugal won de finale van de eerste editie met 1-0 van Nederland in 2019.
Kwalificatie voor het EK 2028
Om de opzet nog aantrekkelijker te maken, heeft de UEFA besloten dat landen zich ook kunnen kwalificeren voor het EK 2028.
Hiermee krijgen een klein aantal landen, die zich niet via de reguliere kwalificatieronden weten te plaatsen, alsnog een kans om deel te nemen aan een eindtoernooi.
Nations League speelschema
Het Nations League speelschema wordt gespeeld in september, oktober en november 2026.
De kwartfinales en de play-offs voor promotie/degradatie tussen A/B en B/C worden afgewerkt in maart 2027.
In juni 2027 worden de halve finales en de finale van de Final Four gespeeld.
De play-offs voor promotie/degradatie tussen C/D staan gepland voor maart 2028.
Het seizoen van de UNL
Elk seizoen van de Nations League zal gespeeld worden in september, oktober en november 2026. Het voetbalseizoen wordt elke 2 jaar gehouden, dus elk oneven jaartal wordt de kampioen bekend.
De deelnemers zijn verdeeld in Leagues op basis van hun prestaties. Binnen een League zijn er meerdere groepen.
Elk jaar zullen teams promoveren naar een hogere League en degraderen naar een lagere League. Teams in de hoogste League spelen finalewedstrijden om het voetbalseizoen te kunnen bekronen met een prijs.
Nations League poules
De UEFA Nations League voetbal bestaat uit 4 leagues: A, B, C en D. Hierbij is League A de hoogste divisie en League D de laagste. Elke League bestaat vervolgens weer uit 4 poules.
Het totaal aantal deelnemende landen is 54. Deze landen zijn als volgt verdeeld over de poules:
- League A bestaat uit 4 groepen van 4 landen, totaal 16 landen
- League B bestaat uit 4 groepen van 4 landen, totaal 16 landen
- League C bestaat uit 4 groepen van 4 landen, totaal 16 landen
- League D bestaat uit 2 groepen van 3 landen, totaal 6 landen
Geschiedenis Nations League
De geschiedenis van de Nations League is een idee dat oorspronkelijk komt van de UEFA en met name de voorzitter. De discussie over een competitie voor nationale teams is in 2011 ontstaan tijdens de UEFA Strategy Meeting in Cyprus. In oktober 2013 gaf de voorzitter van de Noorse voetbalbond aan dat er gesprekken gaande zijn over een derde internationale voetbaltoernooi voor landen.
Op 27 maart 2014 heeft de UEFA bekend gemaakt dat de competitie definitief doorgang zal vinden. Het besluit werd unaniem genomen door de 54 lidstaten van de UEFA. Op 4 december 2014 heeft het Uitvoerend Committee de opzet en het schema formeel goedgekeurd.
In het seizoen 2018/19 vond de eerste editie van dit nieuwe landentoernooi plaats. Seizoen 2026/2027 is al weer de vijfde editie van dit landentoernooi op het Europese continent.
